A historic climate agreement at the ICAO General Assembly

Air France-KLM welcomes the historic agreement signed on 6 October 2016 by governments at the 39th General Assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)*, on a global system for reducing carbon emissions in the international aviation sector.

This unprecedented agreement, the first covering an entire economic sector, is an important step in the history of international policy on climate change. It formalizes the establishment of a global carbon offset mechanism, to achieve the neutral carbon growth target in the aviation industry.

This offset mechanism will enable airlines to invest in sustainable carbon reduction projects. This is the most effective way to supplement the ongoing efforts of the aviation industry to limit CO2 emissions.
